SUMMIT YMCA TRAVEL
BASKETBALL
PROGRAM INFORMATION
|
Thank you for your interest in the Summit YMCA Travel Basketball program.
The YMCA Basketball League of New Jersey is a very competitive league, but
it is a YMCA program. YMCA directors from all over the state of NJ
form an organized Board of Directors, led by a "Commissioner," who tries
hard to make sure that the league abides by YMCA Sports standards,
Character Development, and high expectations of sportsmanship. The
league "BOD" sets requirements and guidelines which are reviewed before and
after each season. Also, each YMCA is different, according to
their YMCA and community, therefore, each YMCA design their program a little
bit differently.
The Summit YMCA is proud of our program standards and especially proud of our
coaches, players, parents, and community. We are very pleased to
continue this traditional basketball experience.
In
order to participate in the Summit YMCA Basketball program,
qualified players must first "tryout"
for the team. This process involves
registering for the tryouts, completing and turning in a few required
program forms, purchasing a
tryout t-shirt, participating in the
practice evaluations, and
making the cut.
After making the tryout cuts, parents and players must complete the
Parent/Player Agreement Forms,
become or renew membership by
completing a membership application (if new) and
paying the appropriate membership fee, along with a
program fee.
Players are required to attend at least one tryout. If they make the
first cut, their shirt number will be placed on the website
(first
cuts) and will be asked to
return for the second tryout. This is not mandatory and will not count
against them if they cannot participate in both tryout practices. On
the other hand, if a player cannot make the first day of tryout, they may
participate in the second tryout; and again, this also will not counted
against them.
Player's expectations are explained in
the Player Agreement Form and will be explained further by coaches.
Parent's expectations are explained in
the Parent Agreement Form and will be explained further by coaches in
the parent meeting at the beginning of the season. Parents are
expected to purchase team uniforms that players
will be able to keep at the end of the season.
Please keep in mind that this is a "Travel League."
Parents are required to transport children to other participating YMCAs in
the state of NJ. Each season is different, as we do not know what
YMCAs will participate from season-to-season, nor will we know how many
teams the league will have in each division. The league ends in a
state tournament. At
the end of the season, the coaches host an annual pot luck Awards Banquet.
Good luck and get ready for a very exciting basketball experience that you
will never forget. |

Players are suggested to register and
participate in the first practice. If

asked to come back for the second
Saturday practice, in order to make the
best decision possible (sometimes, it
helps if a player has a less than
good practice from being nervous).
If a player can make the first practice,
but is unable to make the second
practice, they are not penalized, and
will be evaluated on the one practice
day. If a player cannot make the

and must register and participate in the
second Saturday practice.
Registration is limited to 50 players
per team. Only 12 players will

program forms to the registration table
on the day/time of your child's

*Please have a copy already
available. Will not accept
registration if it is not complete.
Tryout T-Shirt
Shirts must be
purchased ($10) during tryout registration.
Players may not enter gym unless they have
completed registration and paid for a shirt.
Shirts have numbers printed on the back for
evaluation identification purposes.
Practice
Evaluations
Players are
evaluated by Coach Rodney, Coach Eric, and
Coach Kareem. The evaluation practice will be
conducted by Coach Eugene Maxwell, Head
Coach of Summit High School. Players
will be asked to perform in fundamental
motion drills and scrimmages.
Decisions are based primarily on evaluation
scores. If your child is asked to
participate in both practices, evaluation
scores are calculated accordingly; if your
child is only able to attend one practice,
evaluation scores are calculated
accordingly. This is a fair and
unbiased process, however, it is not an easy
one. In fact, it is a very challenging
process, for you as well as for us. We
ask that parents be the first to exemplify
sportsmanship and good role model
practices.
Player Cuts will be posted on this webpage
below, usually by noon the following Monday.
Player's will be identified by their shirt number, not their names. Only 12
players will make the final cut.
Making the Cuts
Players
are required to attend at least one
tryout. If they make the first
cut, their shirt number will be placed
on the website
(first
cuts)
and will be asked to return
for the second tryout. This is not
mandatory and will not count against
them if they cannot participate in both
tryout practices. On the other
hand, if a player cannot make the first
day of tryout, they may participate in
the second tryout; and again, this also
will not counted against them.
Parents, please do not discuss the child's
evaluation with Coach Rodney, Coach Eric, or Coach Kareem. If you have questions
regarding drills, methods, etc, please talk with Coach Maxwell before or
after your child's practice session.
Player Cuts will be posted on this webpage

players will make the final cut.

-
Parent Commitment: Parents
are expected to be committed to

prevent parents from allowing their
child in multiple leagues on
multiple teams, parents and players
must be committed to this program.
Lack of commitment, or when a player
misses 3 practices/games (3 strikes,
you're out), will result in
expulsion from the team and possibly
program. This does not include
missing practices/games due to
severe weather or illness (must have
a doctors note if out from severe
illness). No exception!
Player Agreement Expectations & Form

their belongings and cleanup their gymnasium
after every practice. Players should
always practice healthy habits, such as
wearing appropriate clothing and coats to
prevent sickness, eat properly, and ample
sleep and rest.
*Practices

summit YMCA. Players should remember
that there are many other members

Travel League
Please keep in mind that this is a "Travel League." Parents are
required to transport children to other
participating YMCAs in the state of NJ. Each
season is different, as we do not know what YMCAs
will participate from season-to-season, nor will we
know how many teams the league will have in each
division. There will
be some games (not many) that will be considered
far. Parents
and players are expected to travel to all away
games. It is a league rule that 'not
traveling' will not be acceptable. Forfeiting
will not be an option as it is considered to be a
lack of commitment. The league ends in a state tournament.
For
directions
to participating YMCAs in the League go to
www.njymcabasketball.org.
State Tournament
Following
the completion of all season games, each
team will participate in the State
Tournament. Placement in the
tournament is based on "seeding" or
league standings. The board of
directors are at the mercy of YMCA
facilities and therefore tournament
rounds are scattered across the area
where facility space is available.
